This was a fun one to research - the Baltimore and Arizona ecosystem studies are the only large-scale studies of urban ecosystems in the U.S.
Since more and more of the world is built environment — in other words, where people live — these kinds of ecosystems are the new normal.
Fun facts:
* Lawn grass is the 2nd most-cultivated crop in the U.S., after corn
* The Baltimore Ecosystem Study includes the neighborhoods depicted in The Wire
